So far, not so hot. At this time, it's 58%. It could be much worse but it's not fresh. -_-;; Terrifying incident where 25 factory workers died because the fire doors were locked because the owners had wanted to prevent theft. This despite there having been previous fires.

"There were 90 employees in the facility at the time of the fire, which began when a 25 foot (7.6 m) long deep fat fryer vat may have spontaneously ignited at around 8:30 AM"

Also the owner . . .

"Emmett J. Roe, owner of Imperial Foods Products Inc.; his son Brad, who was operations manager for the company; and plant manager James N. Hair surrendered on March 13, 1992, and were charged with non-negligent manslaughter.[14] There was no trial. On September 15, 1992, owner Emmett Roe pleaded guilty to 25 counts of involuntary manslaughter. No one else was found guilty. Emmett Roe had personally ordered the doors to be locked from the outside.[dead link][4][15] He received a prison sentence of 19 years and 11 months.[6][16][dead link][15] The sentence was unpopular among many of the workers and their families who point out that it amounts to less than a year for each dead person.[dead link][15] Roe became eligible for parole in March 1994, and was released just under four years into his sentence."

Now I think Madoff deserved the prison term he got even without being responsible for mass death so why did a man actually responsible for 25 deaths serve only 4 years?

So being concerned about food and how it's made really isn't just about being snooty about how flavor hits the tongue. We also have to be concerned about the people who make our dinner possible, who often work in hazardous, dirty and poorly paid positions. Even if it's only because people who feel safe when it comes to questioning their working conditions create a situation where our food can be made safer as well.

but I like the song because it basically condenses what I don't like when it comes to a lot of fictional pairings. It always sounds like the beginning of some kind of TV news magazine murder mystery than anything romantic.

Also I can't believe someone mashed up Rammstein's "Du Hast" with Hilary Duff's "Stranger" (instrumental version) and that it worked.
It's a breezy read of less than 300 pages. It talks about how possible or impossible various technologies featured on Doctor Who would be in RL like regeneration, time travel, sonic screwdrivers, the whole 'inside is bigger than the outside' bit and the toughness of Dalek armor. Much recommended for someone who likes that type of thing as the writing is clear and straightforward.

It's a new scientific finding called the "Flashed Face Distortion Effect". You can read more about it here

Every day

I got to admit that I read the funnies to start the day. I really don't get the appeal of Garfield.

I don't know how I feel about this. I understand that raw milk can make you very sick though I'm fine with people drinking the milk their own animals produce (My rule of thumb is that most people are super careful about stuff they feed themselves and their own kids). However, the overall scheme sounds a bit eyebrow-popping and dodgy. A non-farmer buys a share of an animal, pays a monthly fee and claims that through ownership, the transaction isn't held to the same standard as a regular seller-consumer would be. (otherwise, the farmer would have to invest in a lot of expensive equipment to meet certain standards)

Someone at work suggested that said share owner could work a few hours a month to substantiate "ownership."

I have to say my first thought was "Damn, that raw milk is expensive."

A while back a man stood in the ocean saying he wanted to die then died while firemen & police watched from shore because they weren't properly trained/certified to go in after him. He eventually drowned and a woman civilian was the one who took the body back to shore.

I know there are liability arguments about saving him and that drowning people often accidentally drown their would-be saviors (though there is something wrong about cops & firemen JUST watching him) but I'm wondering "Why in God's name did a civilian have to be the one to drag his body to shore? Were they just going to let it float away?" A guy went snorkeling only to find the boat that took him out into deep water was gone so he had to swim to another boat that just happened to be there to get transportation back to land.

What's underwhelming is the compensation they gave him and their overall attitude:

"The staff member who failed to do an accurate headcount has been fired, the paper says, and Cole was given a $200 restaurant voucher and a refund for the trip.

But the spokesman of a regional tour operators association told local Australian CairnsBlog that he thought Cole was exaggerating the danger he faced in the incident. Association of Marine Park Operators' Col McKenzie said Cole was ''making a mountain out of a molehill'' to get media attention"

I must confess if nobody takes my prompt of Dean vs. Cenobites, I might have to do that one.

weird news

Jun. 22nd, 2011 07:53 pm Ok,51 year old actor from Lost marries a 16 year old girl. 1) she doesn't look 16 and 2) if she's 16 now, when did they start dating? Also, if I was the parent of a 16 year old, I'd be seriously chasing off someone old enough to be her dad or at least think "Are you a daft perv?"
I've been neglecting this journal but if LJ keeps glitching like mad, I might move here because I'm tired of posting then having it disappear or looking up someone's entry and having the responses to the entries continually change in number, both increasing and decreasing.
