Plan 9 from Outer Space

You know, I wanted to see for myself if it was camptacularly bad as people say it was. After seeing the first part, I'd say it's pretty bad with quite a few unintentional laughs. (My favorites are the awkward jump cuts and the bad FX)

film review: Senna

Documentary about the Formula 1 race car driver Ayrton Senna who is considered one of the best ever drivers. I got to say that the guy must've been filmed almost constantly. They have film of him talking to the team behind the cars, to other drivers, on TV specials, home movies, etc.

Despite the fact I'm not interested in car racing as a sport, it managed to keep my attention. There's not much about his personal life though you do see a short scene with a blond girl who I presume to be his girlfriend and his family does pop up from time to time (his family also does some of the voiceovers). The major story threads are the underlying dangers of the sport and his drive to win the championship with his main rival Prost, who doesn't hesitate to use politics to his advantage. Ayrton speaks both Portuguese (he's from Brazil) and English. He's also quite good looking.

The movie does tend to try to push him a little too hard as someone wonderful (I don't think he's a bad person but more like a regular person w/o any major batshit Charlie Sheen-type behavior but with drive and competitive spirit) but it's still a recommend.

Ever tried this?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sous-vide I've actually tried some dishes using this method and they were tender. It just seems very time-intensive.

Currently finding peaches rather disappointing this season but am enjoying pluots (plum/apricots) and nectarines.

If you were to recommend a restaurant in the Mid-West, what restaurant would it be?

It's sad that this doesn't surprise me.

OK, we all know Chinese workers made the transcontinental railroad . . . except for the producers who pretty much say they're not thinking about it. e_e

(no subject)

I wonder why women fighters have such a hard time getting traction. I speak as someone who doesn't like boxing or watch mixed martial arts though.

Some seriously slimey BS

The Koch brothers are trying to nullify Wisconsin voters' vote by sending fake absentee ballots with the wrong date & address.

Considering a past election had votes "magically" appearing . . . I think we need UN observers to make sure the election isn't totally fubared.

SPN ficlet: Living in His Shadow

AU, drama, PG-13, Slight Dean/Cas but really not the focus. I’ve seen a lot of fics where one brother insists that the SPN!Verse is the reality while everybody thinks he’s crazy but the other brother ends up in a folie a deux with him. I just wanted to write something different.

Anybody else watching Craig Ferguson?

I watched part of his show last night and being in Paris seems to agree with him.

Why medicine should be ruled by science

http://news.yahoo.com/south-african-soldiers-battle-rhino-poachers-kruger-031005290.html Animals dying because it's believed without basis that their parts are medicinal. Rhino horn has basically the same value as gnawing on your nails, which is none.

Oh, yeah you can tell it was DUDES who came up with this.

I hadn't seen these commercials until I had seen them eviscerated on The Colbert Show. Utter epic fail. e_e

unspoilery spoiler post

This actually applies to a lot of shows.

In general, if a producer doesn't talk about a character or in fact seems to need to be cattle prodded to talk about a character, it doesn't mean they got something good for said character or they're "hiding buried treasure." I'm REALLY tired of hearing this argument. It really means they got NOTHING for the character or don't give a crap. So please stop telling people to be patient or to trust the producer or keep faith or what not.

For example, I talk about science because I genuinely like stories about science. I don't need constant reminders to do so. I talk about food because I genuinely like food and want to talk about various issues regarding food. I don't talk about football or sports because I genuinely don't have any interest in such.

Especially if a producer is on record for non-stop gushing about another character then usually having something big or apparent going for that character.

I really feel people use this argument to prevent dissatisfied people from leaving and affecting ratings with no true regard to whether or not the dissatisfied get satisfaction from the show or not. I'd actually find a more truthful "I got mine and yeah, you got squat" statement to be way more respectful of my intelligence.

Lovely Aquarium

There's also a version with the song Time from Inception.
